The March of Dimes helps moms have full-term healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. If something goes wrong, we offer information and comfort to families. We research the problems that threaten babies and work on preventing them.
Premature birth touches more than half a million babies and their families every year. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities. With everyone’s support, the March of Dimes is funding all-important research by the best scientists to learn ways to help more pregnancies go a full nine months.
In an average week in Minnesota:
~ 1,414 babies are born
~ 148 are born preterm
~ 92 babies are born with low birth weight
~ 7 babies die before reaching their first birthday
The emotional cost of premature birth to families is high – and so are the financial costs to businesses. On average, the health care cost paid by an employer for a full term baby with no complications is $4,551. The average cost of heath care paid by an employer for a pre-term baby is $49,033.
The March of Dimes has invested $1.8 million dollars in active research grants at the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic.
Chapter grant recipients for 2009 in Minnesota include:
~ Cass Lake Indian Health Services: Enhanced prenatal care for American India Women
~ Mayo Clinic: Somali CARES (Culturally Appropriate and Respectful Education and Support) Program for Pregnancy
~ Open Cities Health Center: Our Bodies Gossip
Another key program funded by the March of Dimes is the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) Family Support project at the St. Cloud Hospital. NICU Family Support is a comprehensive set of services, developed and launched to provide information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home and in the event of a newborn death. The March of Dimes invests $60,000 annually in this important program.
The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Our son William was born 16 weeks early, weighing just 1 pound 3 ounces, only slightly more than the weight of four sticks of butter. After his birth, Will was immediately rushed to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which became his new home for the next 112 days.
During Will's first day in the NICU, our pastor baptized him using a small seashell to pour the holy water. When Will stretched his little legs straight up in the air, he revealed a profound strength in his entire body, which was inspiring to us all. Despite the long road ahead, our family was "guardedly optimistic" about Will's situation. In the first months of his life, Will received 11 blood transfusions, spent 62 days on a ventilator, and successfully recovered from stage two of Retinopathy of Prematurity.
Today, Will is a happy, healthy 5-year-old preschooler who loves to play with his older brother, Ethan. We are confident that the research and treatments developed by the March of Dimes were key factors in Wills ability to survive and thrive.
Thank you so much for being here tonight and for supporting the March of Dimes - this organization and its cause means the world to our family.
